New Resource: Vintage Hungry Five Band Publications Archive

A new resource has been posted to aaronhettinga.com - a database of all known folios published for small 5-piece German band. This instrumentation (Two Clarinets, Trumpet, Trombone, and Tuba) was a standard complement for Herr Louie’s famous “Hungry Five” band of the 1920s-30s and continues to be a mainstay of small polka groups around the country.

Fifteen different band books were released through various publishing houses from 1931 to 1980. Even though all of these books are presently out of print and often difficult to acquire, these folios (especially “Harry L. Alford's Hungry Five in Germany”) remain sought after by current groups conforming to this configuration.

Until now, no other known web resource has been made available that assembles a full listing of music publications for this form of ensemble. Here you can find information for all of them along with cover art images, publishers, publication dates, and complete song listings. Also included for some are images of vintage advertisements as well as some occasional commentary/analysis of the publication’s contents and/or historical context.
